This comes after previous alerts on April 19th and 22nd, highlighting the BMD’s ongoing efforts to monitor and address the region’s challenging weather.
The relentless heat is causing widespread issues across Bangladesh, leading to heat-related illnesses and even animal deaths. Children are particularly vulnerable, with hospitals reporting a rise in child admissions for pneumonia, asthma, breathing difficulties, and fevers.
UNICEF’s 2021 Children’s Climate Risk Index categorized Bangladeshi children as “extremely high risk” for climate change impacts, making them especially susceptible to heatstroke and diarrhea during heatwaves.
The poultry industry has also been significantly affected, with reports of mass bird deaths prompting farm closures.
In response to the heatwave, Dhaka University has transitioned to online classes until further notice.
